    may, instead of being prosecuted as an indictable offence, be prosecuted summarily in the manner provided by the provisions of the Criminal Code relating to summary convictions, and if so prosecuted the offence is punishable by a fine not exceeding five hundred dollars or by imprisonment for a term not exceeding twelve months.
